A LOVE FOR OPERA

When was your first time seeing an opera? On April 11, 2012 I went to see The Tales of Hoffman by Jacques Offenbach. I was invited by a friend from university, and I was so blown away from that performance that I started buying tickets to the rest of the performances the same week. At this time, I could only afford Ring 5 seats - but I am happy to say that nowadays I treat myself to seats much closer to the proscenium.

What do you like so much about opera? When I was introduced to Opera, I found a place where the live music was perfect, touching your soul, and embracing every part of you. Whether they are classic or modern, the sets are grand and fascinating, and the costumes are elaborate, and thoughtful. I like feeling transported to another time, and even another person, as I experience the stories performed in each Opera.

Do you have a favourite? My favourite opera is Tosca, by Giacomo Puccini. It is hard to describe exactly why; what I will say is that this one impacted me quite strongly. I spent days listening to all the arias and thinking about Tosca. So much love, and so much grief.

Where is your favourite place to see an opera? For now, my favourite place is the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto. This is the only place where I have seen both Opera and Ballet. This gorgeous building was designed specifically for these types of musical performances. It is the main venue for both Canada Opera Company and The National Ballet of Canada. I do look forward to visiting other amazing theatres.

Any special moments you’d like to reflect on? I usually go to the opera by myself. One day in 2019 I was reminiscing about all the things people in the office have shared with me: food, music, events, other interesting things to come across in Toronto. I asked myself: what can I share that is different? I was hesitant at first to suggest Opera, as it is an acquired taste, but decided to give it a try. I sent out an email inviting the team to come with me to a performance. A small group joined me to see Elektra, and it was a beautiful evening - some of us even cried together! I will never forget this, it was the first time I organized and brought so many people with me. Though there are still performances I would rather enjoy by myself, it was lovely to share a passion of mine with others.

What would you like to share with those who’ve never been to the opera? I believe everyone should experience the Opera at least once. You never know what it will awaken in you. I would also recommend reading about the design of the Four Seasons Centre building. Everything that was considered in the design to accommodate the productions is quite fascinating.
